Epitiro Presents Femtocell Deployment Guide

Femtocell Voice Quality the Topic at Mobile World Congress 2009

Cardiff, UK –Epitiro, the broadband communications authority, will discuss voice quality data from recent Femtocell tests the company has conducted during a presentation at the FemtoZone, part of the Mobile World Congress 2009. The company will also distribute the Femtocell Deployment Guide to provide critical insight for Mobile Operators.

Based on femtocell testing and monitoring trials the company has been conducting over numerous ISP services, the Guide highlights the issues that are likely to affect voice quality. The Guide explores the affects of packet loss, jitter and latency and also references the PESQ Mean Opinion Score (MOS) metric for assessing voice quality. In addition, the impact of traffic management policies from various ISPs is analysed with respect to IPSec (femtocell), TCP, P2P and HTTP (browsing) traffic streams.

“Our testing shows that residential broadband service can vary significantly by time of day, day of week and by type of traffic.” said presenter Steve Greenwood, Epitiro. “We’re keen to share our test data with mobile operators and help them make informed decisions before providing femtocells to their subscribers.”

In July 2008 Epitiro launched the Femtocell Test Suite, the world’s first complete test solution for Operators, Service Providers and Manufacturers of femtocells. The Femtocell Test Suite covers the key stages from device manufacture, to customer pre-test deployment and ultimately to in-life operation - providing real-time service delivery information at every stage.

Unlike other testing products, the Femtocell Test Suite reports real-time IP-based service delivery metrics (not simulated) based on actual traffic events in the broadband backhaul often as a result of network issues or ISP traffic management policies.

“Over the past year the femtocell industry has overcome major technical and business challenges paving the way in 2009 for operators to introduce commercial services. As such the Mobile World Congress is going to be a key event for operators to cement their consumer propositions to ensure their launches are as successful as possible,” said Professor Simon Saunders, Chairman of The Femto Forum.

Since 2000 Epitiro has maintained ongoing monitoring of top internet service providers (ISP) around the world for the purpose of providing industry bodies with actual customer experience data of broadband services.
