Telstra retains top spot, as Australian broadband performance edges up
Telstra retained its top spot in the broadband performance stakes for Q4 of 2008, with TPG and iiNet swapping places for second and third respectively on the previous quarter. The industry’s performance as a whole improved quarter on quarter. “We saw small but significant gains across most of the variables we measure. Australians are able to browse, surf, game and download a little faster than they could in Q3.”
An area of marked improvement was in email delivery times where the average halved from 12 to 6 minutes. This was as a result of specific improvements at a couple of ISPs who had suffered significant email outages in the previous quarter, and had dragged the industry average down. “Internode had some email issues last quarter that affected its performance, but while there were still some issues in Q4, these have declined, and their ranking performance has improved as a result, climbing to sixth from bottom.”
Indeed, there was a lot of action in the lower half of the table, with Optus heading south to bottom spot from a previous ranking of fifth, and AAPT scooting up to fifth from second to bottom. “Optus slumped in certain areas such as ping, DNS response times and came last in email delivery, with average times around 10 minutes. These undermined what was an above average performance in other areas, such as download and connection speeds.”
Epitiro measures the performance of the premium services of eight Australian ISPs from the same locations in three different cities (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) every 15 minutes 24x7, across a range of performance indicators, including email times, browsing, connection and gaming performance variables.
